Alicia Berenson lived a seemingly perfect life until one day six years ago. When she shot her husband in the head five times.

Since then she hasn't spoken a single word. It's time to find out why.

I've so many good things about this book and finally got myself a preloved copy and finish reading it like  in December last year. Back to the review - the story starts off slow with the character introduction and the background of the story. Easing me into the story of Theo's personal mission of getting Alicia to talk again and find out what actually happened that faithful day six years ago.

The book was written in two perspectives - one of Theo's pov and the other one is through the diary of Alicia. So, even though I never 'heard' Alicia's voice, her story is still being told. As many other readers out there, I am rooting really hard for Theo to succeed in making Alicia talk again and finally proves her innocents. Or so I thought.

There was so much twist and turns to the story that I definitely did not see coming. All these turns are making me confused and suspects of everything and everyone. It was so hard to predict the end game for each character and when it turns out the way it did, I was left stunned and in a state of disbelief. Yeah, I really couldn't accept the way it ended. There was so kind of anger but also satisfaction as it was not really what I expected it to be! So glad to read books with different ending than I thought. Bruised my reader-ego a little but yeah, keep me on my toe.

The writing and the story was brilliant! The writer was able to keep me hooked and I really had a hard time to put the book down. The suspense, the mystery, everything was present at the right place to keep me entertained. Sure it was one of my greatest read of last year. I love it so much!

Cute laaaaa.

I is adore!

Walaupun cerita sambungan ni shorter than novel pertama, ia masih sarat dengan ilmu dan pengajaran. Ceritanya juga berlanjut sehingga umur Furqan mencecah  alam remaja dan dia punya kematangan, just wow. Sungguh klon Irfan dengan flare Hani. Family relationship yang penulis gambarkan sangatlah membuatkan saya 🥰🥺 Anyway, I'm officially in love gila-gila dengan penulisan NIH. Looking forward to read more from her.

Encanto [2021]

Assalamualaikum, good day dearest!

Title: Encanto

Runtime: 102 minutes

Genre: Musical, Animation, Family, Comedy

Director: Jared Bush, Byron Howard, Castro Smith

Writer: Charise Castro Smith, Jared Bush

Released year: 2021

Casts: Stephanie Beatriz, Maria Cecilia Botero, John Leguizamo

Country/Language: United States/English, Spanish

Plot:

Encanto tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal-every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family's last hope - IMDB

Trailer:

Another week, another animation review. Encanto told us a story of Mirabel who is a one odd out in the Madrigal family. While everyone else had a room of their own with the power given to them by the magical candle, Mirabel don't. And for that, she was always on the bad side of her grandmother, abuela.

The movie follows the story of Mirabel trying to save the magic when she witness cracks in their home during the celebration of her little cousin's magic revelation (?) and lemme tell you, the journey was sooooo fun. Adding up the  fun songs that suites the storyline, spice up the story even more! And I am very very sure we will not talk about Bruno in this part. Because duhhhh, Bruno is the 'bad guy'.

The magic of every Madrigal was so unique and each character shone through their magic. I freaking lovessss Aunty Pepa's power😂😂😂 She's had the most hilarious power, I mean whyyyy. Couldn't even hide how she feels because it would be sooo obvious to everyone in town. The animation, what to say, it is Disney's production, a big company so of course it turns out so beautiful.

Overall thoughts, just go and watch this movie if you haven't. And watch it again if you have. It was very fitting that I watched this during my busy and stressful week. I got to laugh some and cry some. It was so so good that I am veeeeery tempted to watch it again after this.

Jumpa - gaduh

Lepak sama - gaduh

Study sama - gaduh

Aku suka part dua ketul ni duk prank satu sekolah buat itu ini, perangai dua-dua memang serupa tapi tak sama, pokoknya mereka memang serasi bersama! Watak-watak sampingan pun memainkan peranan penting jugak.

Babak aksi pun diselitkan serba-sedikit. Jadi, kalau korang enjoy baca ILUS, aku rasa korang akan enjoy baca TSK ni. Kudos to penulis untuk penulisan yang hebat ni. Insya-Allah akan datang aku akan explore lagi buku-buku beliau.

House Of Koi is about identity and learning that sometimes your future is waiting for you in your past.

The story follows Mila as she strives to reconcile the person she become to fit into her American international school with the young girl she used to be who spoke Mandarin and Malay with ease. Is it too late to embrace both parts of herself?

When Mila sis sent to the top of the mountain to live with her grandmother for a year when her parents go away for business, she cannot avoid her native tongue. To make matters worse, Mila must now attend a local private school, and navigate a world she seems to barely understand.

Everyone keeps telling her that she cannot forget her heritage, but tis only makes her hide even deeper within herself. Until she meets the fish boy from the bottom of the mountain. Together, they teach one another what the other is best at, but whenever Mila asks about the past, he refuses to answer. She resolves to find out what happened that caused her to not be able to look her grandmother in the eye.

This book offers a heart-warming story of Mila who's adjusting her usual busy and bustling city life in Georgetown to a quiet and serenity of Bukit Mertajam. Finding it hard to adjust to a not really a new surrounding and feeling out of place and the uneasiness that comes with those feelings are totally relatable. I personally love House of Koi and what it offers.

I could totally relate to Mila who was struggling to adjust to her new school that was so much different from her former school. Adding to her pain was her struggle to understand her own mother tongue languages, Malay and Chinese while everyone else is far greater than her. However, as much as I love the setting of the beginning of this book, I couldn't help but felt annoyed with Mila's antics in protesting against her parents for leaving her.

The author did a really good job in portraying Mila as both the villain and the hero of this book. I have to say, the Mila in the beginning, middle and the end were all different and her character development was *chef kiss. I hated how she refused to reconnect with her childhood home and constantly whine about something despite her being in middle-high school. But then, Sean came to save the day!

Sean - this character gave an extra chili oil into my mee tarik (probably not my best analogy). He added a much more flavor to this already flavorful story and it wasn't a bad thing! I love his character so much and I could say if Mila and Sean had a duel, I would probably root for him. Such a hard-working son and a  good person overall.

Considering the whole story is about Mila finding her identity as a Malaysian Chinese, there were loads of dialogues written in pinyin and while I took one semester of Mandarin class during diploma, that doesn't mean I understand whatever being said. So, the English translation right after the pinyin or Malay (saya faham Bahasa Melayu tapi buku ni diterbitkan oleh rumah penerbitan luar negara jadi terjemahan Bahasa Inggeris tu sangat membantu) is a great move. Save a lot of my time from going back and forth to the footnote or translation page, if any that is.

Another plus of this book is the author's ability in portraying and bring the 'Malaysia' situation alive. The mentioned of several things just spark some memory to me and it was so nostalgic. So much memory of Malaysian (probably more for those in their 30s) being told in the book and I think many could relate to those things. All in all, I really enjoyed my time reading this book and it was such a fun read. Though written in English with occasional Malay and more pinyin, it was easy to understand and follow. And plus, the cover is so gorgeous! And who doesn't love a beautiful book cover?!

Moana [2016]

  Assalamualaikum, good day dearest!

Title: Moana

Runtime: 107 minutes

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Family, Comedy

Director: Ron Clements, John Muskers, Don Hall, Chris Williams

Writer: Jared Bush, Ron Clements, John Muskers, Don Hall, Chris Williams, Pamela Ribon, Aaron Kandell, Jordan Kandell

Released year: 2016

Casts: Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson,

Country/Language: United States/English

Plot:

Moana is on the line to be the chief of their island. Her heart longs for the sea but her father always forbit her from going on a boat. When the old legend became reality, the curse of Te Fiti reached her island to the point where fishermen no longer caught fishes and the crops are dying, Moana sets out to the Ocean's call and went on adventure to find the demigod Maui who stole the heart of Te Fiti and return the heart to the rightful place.

Trailer:

I keep saying I will watch this movie and without me knowing, it was almost seven years after its initial released🤡🤡🤡 Better late than never, they said ey? The thing is, one of the OST from this movie is my favorite songs even since it was released. Yeah, how dare me not watch the movie but listen to the song (in case you're wondering, it was How Far I'll Go by Alicia Cara).

As every animation I have ever watched, Moana also received big double thumbs up from me. I love everything about this movie from the beautiful sceneries to the comedic scenes and hilarious dialogues, it was so so so so great! Just like any other Disney princess, Moana is so likeable like you can't hate her. She had no fault.

Her adventure to save her island and people is so  thrilling! I haven't watch much movies with water or sea setting and I was very such that something gonna pop out of the water and just attack on her boat. Yeah, it's not Jaws inspired movie but my brain seems like could not register that. Anyway, it was hilariously good when Moana finally found Maui and gonna haul him into her boat and took him to return Te Fiti's heart.

From there on, there was so much development for both Moana and Maui, and not to forget, Hei Hei! The underrated star of the show. The ending was somewhat a bit unexpected and weirdly, confusedly hilarious for me. Not gonna spoil it here but yeah, I found it somehow reaaaaally close to the creature we called woman. Like really. Is there some hidden message there? Haha.

Overall, I definitely am watching this again. And I know I will not get bored of this movie. Ending this with my fav song from Moana

Melati Ahmad has imagined her mother's death countless times. Plagued by gruesome thoughts she believes are put into her head by a djinn, Melati has developed an intricate set of tapping rituals to tame the monster within and keep her mother safe.

But there are things that Melati can't protect her mother from. On the evening of May 13,1969, racial tensions in her home city of Kuala Lumpur boil over, The Chinese and Malays are at war, and Mel and her mother become separated by a city in flames.

With a twenty-four-hour curfew in pace and all lines f communication down, it will take the help of a Chinese boy named Vincent and all of the courage and grit in Melati's arsenal to overcome the violence on the streets, her own prejudices, and her djinn's surging power, and make it back to the one person she can't risk losing.

The started out a bit confusing for me because of Melati's mental condition - the constant counting, the djinn in her head (I was wondering if it really is about one), her irrational fear of losing her mother and the constant pictures of her mother died, everything is telling me to identify what she suffers from and it definitely is not the purpose of the story. Despite the confusion, I really enjoyed the narration and writing style. It was easy to understand and follow through.

As this book consist of a story with a heavy background and topic, I really really took my time in finishing it. It was not because I don't enjoy the story - I did, very much. It was due to the heavy situation portrayed in the story. The moment Melati stepped out of The Rex after watching Paul Newman's finding the usually busy street in dead silence, I knew the trouble are coming and I wasn't ready to face it. Adding up to her current mental condition, I could felt her fear through the words. It was something really scary and when she went back to get her friend, Sal, the event following it, that was the moment I enough for a few days.

I swear, it took me so much courage to continue reading this story. The event of 13th May 1963 was real. It happened and reading this - albeit a fiction - means that some if not all part of it happen (or at least the situations back then). Melati's journey to find her mother doesn't happen in an instance, it took the involvement of so many people and herself. I was so glad she met with Auntie Bee who took a really good care of her and other people all while they were suffering from the riot too.

Due to the heaviness of the topic, this book is not made for one sitting. You gotta stop to find your breath and clear your mind. And stabiles your emotions. And that was all for me. At some point, I cried really hard that the words turn blurry. The story is a whole combination of heart wrenching but also heartwarming. I also loves Melati's character development from one who were so unsure of herself to one who protect and help and fight back. She is so admirable. Besides Melati, I also had a very profound love for Auntie Bee. For me, she's the unsung hero of the whole story, the one who tried to hold up for everyone and always giving despite she herself is in the same predicament.

I think this book is  a good start for people to educate and put some sense in their mind about what happened back then. It was a serious matter and asking it to happen again was just plain stupid.

Pada Sofia, Aizudin adalah lelaki sempurna. Suami yang terbaik dan ayah penyayang. Namun, dia lupa. Yang sempurna itu hanyalah Tuhan. Bukan manusia.

- AIZUDIN

"Dengan siapa?" - SOFIA

Air mata Sofia jatuh terseka.

"Sofia nak cakap abang pentingkan diri sendiri. - AIZUDIN

"I trusted you for life time, abang and this is how you pay me..." - SOFIA

"Apapun jadi, penceraian bukan pilihan..." - SOFIA

"Terima kasih, sayang..." - AIZUDIN

Aizudin bagai mahu tersembam menahan beratnya ujian.

"Dia hanya pinjaman. Sofia relakan dia pergi, abang..." -SOFIA

"Abang juga relakan da pergi..." - AIZUDIN

Tak ubah seperti telah jatuh tertimpa tangga. Aizudin memejamkan mata. Menyebut nama Tuhan berkali-kali.

Aizuddin sendiri pun agak menyakitkan hati jugak la time flashback time dia dekat Indonesia tu.

Cer share.  Apapun, its a good book to read for leisure, tak payah pening-pening, kau nangis jela. Hehe.

Zootopia [2016]

January 08, 2023 2 Comments

   Assalamualaikum, good day dearest!

Title: Zootopia

Runtime: 108 minutes

Genre: Animation, Family, Adventure, Comedy

Director: Rich Moore, Byron Howard

Writer: Jared Bush, Phil Johnson

Released year: 2016

Casts: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Shakira, J.K Simmons

Country/Language: USA/English

Plot:

Ever since she was little bunny, Judy Hopps dream of being a police office at the big mammal metropolis city, Zootopia. Judy successfully proves everyone wrong when she graduated from the police academy on top of her class and as the first rabbit to ever graduate. She was quickly transferred to Zootopia and was eager to start her first day. On the first day, Judy quickly learnt how tough it was to prove herself among the big animals and fierce predators. Determined to prove herself, Judy jumped on mysterious animal missing case, going against her supervisor's word. Judy had 2 days to rack the case and she is very determined. Unfortunately, the only clue she had was with Nick Wilde, a sly fox that might make her job harder than it seems.

Trailer:

I have been wanting to watching this movie since BTS tried dubbing one scene from the movie. But I keep forgetting the title of the movie. So, when I found this movie by chance while goggling for animation, I quickly jumped on it.

It started out really cute with the Little Judy and her friends acted on a theater and she told the audience about her dream of being a cop. I love Judy's positive character of wanting to try it even though everyone were trying to talk her out of it, including her parents. And when Judy moved to Zootopia to live her dream, the reality sat in. It was nothing like she dream of it to be.

When the opportunity came, Judy quickly grab it, even though it means she had to work with the enemy, fox. I actually did not expect the story to have some suspenseful element to it. I thought it would be rainbow and sunshine but damn, it was good to have some mystery to it!

I really love Judy and Nick's banter, soooo cute! And the way they built up trust and friendship out of it, was awwww. Being a family-friendly animation, there were plenty if not every scenes filled with humors that could get you non-stop laughing. It was a very enjoyable movie with a super nice graphics.

If I have to make a complaint, I would say that the OST was not really as nice and considering Shakira is the one singing it, it really could do better. That aside, it was a totally great movie to be enjoyed by the whole family.
